From 19-21 May this week, a 3-day training is being held at the Government Building in Funafuti, Tuvalu facilitated by the Pacific Disability Forum, Australia Human Rights Commission and People with Disabilities Australia.

The SPC/Regional Rights Resource Team Country Focal Officer, Ms. Saini Seluka provided valuable support along with the Tuvalu Red Cross Society Secretary General, Ms. Eseta Lauti and Fusi Alofa Association Project Officer, Ms. Matakina Simii. Unfortunately, Mr. Frederick Miller from PIFS and Mr. Alastair Wilkinson from UNESCAP were unable to join the team in Tuvalu.

A total of 8 government representatives and 14 members of FAA Tuvalu attended this training which aims at "Building Capacity and Knowledge of Disabled Persons Organisations (DPOs) and Government Representatives in the Pacific to Progress Disability Issues". The Tuvalu training like the previous 5 countries, focused on the human rights of persons with disabilities, CRPD, women with disabilities, disability-inclusive policy, Pacific Regional Strategy on Disability, advocacy and good governance.

Preliminary work on the development of a national policy on disability for Tuvalu also took place at this training.

The training to be conducted in 9 countries (Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, PNG, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu) is funded under the AusAID's Pacific Public Sector Linkages Programme. Tuvalu is the 6th country to receive this training with Fiji planned for next week 27-29 May in Nadi.

The PNG training is scheduled for July and Tonga in August.
